16 teams will battle it out for the ultimate glory as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup begins later this year.
One of the greatest competitions in T20 cricket will be renewed once again as Australia play hosts for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup later this year. The inaugural edition of the competition was held in 2007 and this is now going to be the eighth edition of the tournament.
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Dates
October 16 will mark the beginning of the tournament and it will conclude with the final on November 13. The semi-finals are slated to take place on November 9 and 10.
Venues
Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney have been finalized as the venues for hosting the mega event. The Sydney Cricket Ground and the Adelaide Oval have been decided as the venues to host the semi-finals. To make things bigger and better, the final will be played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Teams
The tournament will be played in two stages — the Group Stage and the Super 12s. Eight teams have already booked their berths for the Super 12 phase. Eight more teams will lock horns in the Group stage to claim the remaining four places in the Super 12s.
Here are the teams that will be seen competing in the tournament.
Group stage: Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Scotland, UAE, Netherlands and Ireland.
Super 12: Australia, India, Pakistan, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Among all these teams, West Indies are the most successful with two T20 World Cup titles to their name. But the decline in the quality of their cricket over the years didn’t allow them to qualify directly for the Super 12s. Instead, they will need to fight it out and prove their mettle in the group stage to make their way into the Super 12s this time.
India and Pakistan have been formidable forces as well. They dominated the tournament during its formative years. Although they haven’t won any title after 2010, both the teams have been very competitive and have made it to the knock-out stages many times.
England, Sri Lanka and Australia also have one title to each of their names but they haven’t been consistent enough like the other teams mentioned before. South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, on the other hand, are the only teams among the top 10 sides in the ICC rankings to never win a T20 World Cup.
