Odisha FC have announced the extension of Brazilian striker Diego Mauricio’s contract for two more years. The agreement will keep him at the club until 2025. The club announced on April 3 through its social media, following an impressive performance by the Brazilian in the ISL 2022-23 campaign.
The striker was also the top scorer in the ISL 2022-23 season; it convinced the club’s management to extend his contract without delay. Club President Raj Athwal expressed his delight over the deal, saying that Diego has proven himself as one of the club’s top strikers during his two-year stint.
Diego Mauricio expressed his happiness about staying with the club. He said he belongs to Odisha and loves the people and the city. The striker, who had a brief stint with Mumbai City in the previous season, also thanked the fans for their love and support. Diego first joined Odisha FC in 2020 and scored 12 goals throughout the league campaign before moving to Qatar to play with Al Shahania SC. Yet, his stay with the Middle Eastern club didn’t go as planned, and he joined Mumbai City as a short-term replacement in January 2022. The Brazilian did well in his little time with the Islanders and scored in their iconic win in the AFC Champions League.
In July 2022, the striker reunited with Odisha in a one-year deal and proved to be the team’s most valuable asset throughout the season, prompting the club to extend his stay for another two years.
Diego Mauricio will now be in action with Odisha FC in the upcoming Super Cup, which begins on April 8. His contract extension is expected to boost the team’s confidence and morale as they look forward to a successful campaign in the upcoming seasons.
