The FIFA World Cup in Qatar got off to a stunning start on Sunday with an entertaining opening ceremony and an exciting match between Ecuador and hosts Qatar.
BTS’ Jungkook delivered a breathtaking performance in the opening ceremony and the fans can’t stop talking about it even now. Jungkook released the World Cup song ‘Dreamers’, just before he set the stage on fire.
The fans were already pretty excited when he was roped in to perform at the opening ceremony and they went completely crazy once he went up on the stage. His song has been even hailed as the best World Cup song so far. The other World Cup songs that became popular over the years are Cup of Life by Ricky Martin, Waka Waka by Shakira, and Waving Flag by K’naan.
The entire atmosphere in the stadium was absolutely electric during the opening ceremony and it even continued to be so once the match started. Ecuador went on the charge straightaway and troubled the Qatar defense right from the word go.
They netted their first goal right in the fifth minute of the match but it was ruled out by VAR. But Ecuador didn’t have to wait for long to go ahead in the scoreline as Enner Valencia converted a penalty in the 16th minute again. Valencia shot the ball straight down the bottom right corner of the goal to give Ecuador the lead.
Qatar looked in deep trouble as they failed to counter Ecuador’s defense. Valencia found the shooting boots again 15 minutes later, in the 31st minute of the match, as he headed a perfectly whipped assist from Preciado on the right flank into the goal.
Ecuador went into the half-time 2-0 up. Qatar was expected to put up a fight in the second half but Ecuador built a wall in defense in the second half to defend their lead and win the match 2-0. As a result, Qatar became the first host nation to lose their opening match of the World Cup.
