The battle of the best T20 teams in the world is set to commence once again as 16 teams lock horns to claim the ultimate prize in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 starting October 16. The eighth edition of the tournament will see eight teams competing in the Group stage at first. Four teams will then qualify from the Group stage to join eight more teams in the Super 12 phase.
Let us now take a look at the important dates of the mega event.
October 16, 2022 – Tournament Opener
The T20 World Cup 2022 will commence with a Group A tussle between Sri Lanka and Namibia in Geelong. The two sides have met only once before in T20 Internationals, and that was during the T20 World Cup last year. Sri Lanka won that match rather easily as they bowled out Namibia for just 96 runs and then chased the target down with seven wickets and 39 balls to spare.
October 23, 2022 – India vs Pakistan: Battle of the arch-rivals
This will be the most awaited clash of the tournament as arch-rivals India and Pakistan will lock horns in an intense battle once again. India won’t have fond memories as Pakistan defeated them by 10 wickets in their group stage encounter during the last T20 World Cup. They will be desperate to avenge their loss in this encounter. As far as overall record goes, India are miles ahead though. They have played 10 T20 internationals against one another and India have emerged victorious seven times. Pakistan has won only twice whereas one encounter resulted in a tie. The winner was decided by a bowl-out after the match and India won that as well.
October 28, 2022 – England vs Australia: Battle of the World Champions
This will be another exciting battle as two old rivals — England and Australia — take on each other in Melbourne. They are the Ashes rivals and, at the same time, the World Championships in the ODI and T20I formats respectively. The head-to-head record between these two sides is also quite close. Australia and England have met each other in 20 T20 internationals, with Australia winning 10 and England winning nine. One match hasn’t yielded any result. Both the sides are almost equal in quality and strength, and hence this promises to be an exciting contest.
November 1, 2022 – England vs New Zealand: 2019 ODI World Cup rivalry renewed
The rivalry between England and New Zealand has gained prominence recently, especially after their spectacular battle in the 2019 ODI World Cup final. England emerged victorious in that match on account of more boundaries scored (as the score was tied) and hence they were declared the Champions as well. As far as their head-to-head record on T20 Internationals goes, England have the upper hand with 12 wins in 22 matches. New Zealand have won only eight times in comparison, with one match ending in a tie and another yielding no result. Fireworks can be expected once again as the two sides lock horns on November 1 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
November 2, 2022 – India vs Bangladesh: Battle of the Nidahas Rivals
When it comes to quality and experience, India is a far superior side as compared to Bangladesh. That reflects in their head-to-head T20I record as well, with India winning 10 out of the 11 encounters between the two sides. Most of these have been one-sided contests but Bangladesh have always stepped up whenever they have taken on India in a major tournament. The Nidahas Trophy in 2018 was an example where the match went right down to the wire. Although India won it, Bangladesh delivered a spectacular performance. The rivalry between these two Asian sides has only intensified since then and an equally exciting contest can be expected when the two sides meet on November 2 in Adelaide.
November 9, 2022 – Semi-Final 1
The first semifinal of this mega event will take place on November 9 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. We have seen some spectacular knock-out clashes over the years and this one also promises to be an intense battle considering the quality of the teams taking part in the competition.
November 10, 2022 – Semi-Final 2
The second semi-final will take place on the very next day, on November 10, at the picturesque Melbourne Cricket Ground. The second battle in the semifinals is always the more exciting one as the pressure is high, with one team already in the final. There is always just one spot up for grabs and the two teams dish out their best performance to get one step closer to the trophy.
November 13, 2022 – Final
This is the day when the champion will be crowned. When an entire team will break out in celebration, with the trophy in their hands, and champagne being splashed all around on their teammates. India, Pakistan, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Australia have won the titles previously. It remains to be seen whether the winner this time is going to be one of these teams or we are going to see a new champion rising again.
