Team India opened their CAFA Nations Cup 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Tajikistan on Friday. The game marked a historic first win over the Central Asian side in 18 years. The match also brought India its first international victory since March this year.
Goals from centre-backs Anwar Ali and Sandesh Jhinghan sealed the win for the Blue Tigers in Dushanbe. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu delivered a standout performance with a crucial penalty save.
India struck early, just five minutes into the game. Anwar Ali headed in a corner that narrowly crossed the goal line. Tajik goalkeeper Muhiriddin Hasanov got a touch, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the opener. The hosts responded with aggressive play but were repeatedly denied by India’s resilient defence.
The second goal, which eventually proved to be the winner, also came from the backline. Sandesh Jhinghan found the net after a well-orchestrated long throw tactic. It was a part of a clear strategic approach introduced by debutant head coach Khalid Jamil.
“This win is massive—not just because it’s against Tajikistan after 18 years, but also because it’s our first real test under a new system,” said a team insider after the match.
Khalid Jamil’s debut as India’s head coach brought immediate impact. Despite missing senior striker Sunil Chhetri and several key players from Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Jamil built his attack around the backline.
Forward options like Irfan Yadwad and Vikram Partap Singh failed to leave a mark. Yet, the coach’s emphasis on defensive runs and set-piece threats paid off.
India’s starting XI featured Gurpreet in goal, with defenders Anwar Ali and Jhinghan anchoring a solid back line. The midfield, led by Suresh Singh Wangjam and Jeakson Singh, maintained composure throughout. Lallianzuala Chhangte and Udanta Singh provided pace on the flanks.
Tajikistan’s strong lineup, with Akhtam Nazarov and Ehsoni Panshanbe in key roles, struggled to break India’s structure. Their only goal came in the second half. However, Gurpreet’s penalty save late in the game crushed their hopes of a comeback.
With this victory, India took a step forward in their debut at the CAFA Nations Cup. Now, they begin preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup qualifiers on a high note.
