In a commanding display at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on February 12, 2025, India secured a 142-run victory over England in the third One Day International (ODI). The game completed a 3-0 series sweep. The triumph was anchored by Shubman Gill’s stellar century and a collective bowling effort that dismantled England’s batting lineup.

Opting to bat first after losing the toss, India faced an early setback when captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just one run by Mark Wood in the second over. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli stabilized the innings with a 116-run partnership. Kohli reached his half-century in 50 balls before falling to Adil Rashid for 52. Gill continued his fine form, bringing up his seventh ODI century off 95 balls, eventually scoring 112 from 102 deliveries.

Shreyas Iyer contributed a brisk 78 off 64 balls, and KL Rahul added a quick 40 from 29 balls. Their efforts propelled India to a formidable total of 356 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Adil Rashid was the standout bowler for England. He claimed four wickets for 64 runs as India posted a massive total of 356 runs.

Chasing a daunting target of 357, England started aggressively. The openers, Ben Duckett and Phil Salt put up a 60-run partnership in just over six overs. Despite a groin injury, Duckett scored a quick 34 off 22 balls before being deceived by a slower delivery from Arshdeep Singh.

Salt followed soon after dismissed for 23. In his first ODI since 2020, Tom Banton showed promise with a 38-run knock, including innovative strokes like reverse-swept sixes. But England’s middle order crumbled under pressure. Joe Root was bowled by Axar Patel for 24. Captain Jos Buttler managed only six runs before chopping onto his stumps off Harshit Rana.

The lower order offered little resistance, with only Gus Atkinson providing some late fireworks, scoring 38 off 19 balls. England was eventually bowled out for 214 in 34.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, and Hardik Pandya took two wickets for India, showcasing a well-rounded bowling performance.

This comprehensive victory highlighted India’s dominance throughout the series. The result also exposed England’s vulnerabilities in the 50-over format. The hosts showcased a blend of solid top-order batting and effective bowling strategies. This sets a high benchmark ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy.

England faced criticism over their preparation and performance. Questions arise about their training routines and commitment. The series defeat marked England’s 16th loss in 23 ODIs since the 2023 World Cup. This clearly indicates a need for introspection and restructuring.

India’s clean sweep in this series is a morale booster as they prepare for the Champions Trophy. The outcome reinforces their position as a formidable force in international cricket.
