India and the West Indies meet each other in the second T20I of the ongoing series at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Friday, October 9. India currently lead the series 1-0 after winning the first match in Lucknow. The Windies will have to focus a lot on building partnerships with the bat if they aim to challenge India’s hegemony. The home team, despite seeming rather inexperienced with the ball, have managed to hold their own extremely well so far. While it was captain Shreyas Iyer’s maiden ton that propelled them to victory in the first match, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan also played vital roles.

On this tour, the Windies have suffered greatly because of their inability to counter the Indian spinners. Captain Shai Hope and Kamil Pooran, who opened the innings for the visitors in Lucknow, are known to use their feet well, but the rest of their batters too need to work out ways to play spin well. With the ball in hand, spinner Akeal Hosein was the only bowler from the West Indies to concede less than ten runs per over. If the visitors are to stem the Indians’ run-flow, especially inside the powerplay, their spinners need to get better at pitching the ball in the right areas.

Key Players

Shreyas Iyer (IND): Captain Shreyas Iyer, who has flown under the radar so far with his antics with the bat in hand, showed his class with a 43-ball 102 not out in Lucknow. Iyer has always been seen as a firebrand in T20 cricket, especially in the Indian Premier League, and now he displayed his abilities at the international level as well. The Mumbai batter can pick up the length of a delivery quickly before deciding which shot to play against it. Coming in to bat at number four, Iyer can be trusted to build partnerships while also taking the game deep and hitting boundaries for fun at the death. When it comes to his captaincy skills, Iyer is full of confidence as he recently led the Indians to the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.

Sherfane Rutherford (WI): Sherfane Rutherford’s 56 was critical for the West Indies to set up a challenging total of 171 in Lucknow. The middle-order batter, who is one of the few good players of spin for the visitors, is known for his composure in the middle. While Rutherford can use the long handle to good effect to hit balls out of the park, he does not shy away from building partnerships either. Most importantly, Rutherford plays each ball on its merit and does not get committed before it is bowled. He is quite sharp on the cut and sweep, which give him a lot of options in case his regular scoring areas straight of the wicket are stopped somehow by the Indians.

Match Prediction

India are the favourites to win. They showed their muscle power in the first match and are expected to carry on in the same vein of form. There is a huge difference in class and quality between the two teams, with the Indians boasting tremendous strength in their batting unit. The Windies will have to bat exceptionally well to outdo the Indians.
