India’s new coach, Khalid Jamil, has explained why star striker Sunil Chhetri was left out of the squad for the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup.

At the national camp, Jamil stated the CAFA Nations Cup is a warm-up for the crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, where Chhetri’s experience could be key.

Jamil explained, “Chhetri isn’t here because this tournament prepares us for the Asian Cup Qualifiers.” He made it clear that the exclusion was a tactical decision supporting team objectives rather than a reflection on the forward.

Jamil, who took over from Manolo Marquez earlier this month, announced a list of 35 probables for the CAFA Nations Cup, set to be played across Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Chhetri’s name was noticeably absent, raising questions until Jamil’s clarification.

Chhetri, who retired from international play in 2024, was recalled in March 2025 for a friendly against the Maldives. Since then, he has played four matches.

Following Chhetri’s return, India’s subsequent results declined, prompting Marquez to step down as coach.

“I also want to try out a few other players during this FIFA window. I had a conversation with him about the same thing. It’s always a pleasure to have a player like him in the team. The door is always open for him,” Jamil added, reaffirming Chhetri’s standing in the national setup. “Sunil is a legend of Indian football. I have played against him and seen him play on numerous occasions; he is one of my favourite players. He is a role model for Indian football.”

The national camp began on Saturday with 22 players in attendance. The remaining 13 are expected to join soon, as they are currently engaged in the ongoing Durand Cup.

India has been placed in Group B of the CAFA Nations Cup and will face a tough road ahead. The group fixtures include matches against co-hosts Tajikistan on August 29, heavyweights Iran on September 1, and Afghanistan on September 4. The tournament concludes with the third-place match and final scheduled for September 8 in Hisor and Tashkent, respectively.

Jamil views the CAFA Nations Cup as a chance to evaluate new talent and reposition India for Asian success. Chhetri’s omission is a calculated strategy to refresh the squad, keeping the option of his return open.

As the Indian team moves into a new era under Jamil, the spotlight will now be on the younger players stepping into big shoes, while the country’s most revered footballer continues to inspire, whether on the field or from the sidelines.
