In a heart-wrenching end to a tightly fought contest, India’s national football team suffered a 0-1 defeat against hosts Hong Kong in a crucial 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifier match on Tuesday. The only goal of the match came in dramatic fashion during second-half injury time. Hong Kong were awarded a controversial penalty that Stefan Pereira coolly converted.

The decisive moment arrived in the 94th minute, when Indian goalkeeper Vishal Kaith charged off his line in an attempt to clear a loose ball. However, he ended up colliding with Michael Udebuluzor inside the box. Referee pointed to the spot and issued a yellow card to Kaith. Pereira then stepped up and sent the ball past the diving custodian, triggering celebrations in a sea of red at the newly built Kai Tak Stadium.

Despite the late heartbreak, India showed signs of promise throughout the match, particularly in the first half where they created several opportunities. However, their familiar woes in front of goal returned to haunt them. Coach Manolo Marquez’s decision to start without veteran striker Sunil Chhetri raised eyebrows, though the 39-year-old was introduced in the second half.

One of India’s best chances came in the 35th minute. Liston Colaco made a darting run down the left and delivered a precise cross to Ashique Kuruniyan, who failed to capitalize, sending his shot wide from close range. Colaco later tested the goalkeeper with a long-range effort, but it was safely gathered.

Hong Kong, while enjoying superior possession, were also denied a goal in the first half thanks to a crucial clearance off the line by Asish Rai after Kaith was caught off guard during a free-kick.

In the second half, India pushed forward with renewed urgency. Kuruniyan, dynamic on the flanks, found space again but couldn’t find the finish. Chhetri, brought on alongside Naorem Singh, was given a golden chance in the 81st minute after a sharp cutback from Lallianzuala Chhangte. However, the legendary striker failed to connect cleanly, summing up India’s frustrating night in front of goal.

The result marks another blow to India’s qualifying hopes, following a goalless draw against Bangladesh in March. With just one point from two matches, the Blue Tigers must now regroup quickly if they are to stay in contention for a spot in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
