Mumbai City FC, the reigning Indian Super League (ISL) champions, announced on Saturday the signing of creative midfielder Brandon Fernandes on a free transfer. The 29-year-old, who will sport the number 10 jersey, has committed to a three-year contract with an option for a further season.

Fernandes debuted over a decade ago. He had a brief stint with the Islanders in 2015 and brings experience and accolades to the team. His career highlights include winning the ISL League Winners’ Shield (2019-20), the Super Cup (2019), and the Durand Cup (2021) with FC Goa. With 163 appearances and 25 goals in Indian domestic tournaments and the AFC Champions League, Fernandes also boasts 31 assists.

Last season, Fernandes scored three goals and made four assists, including one against Mumbai City FC in the ISL semi-final. He also led the league in creating chances with 60 opportunities. Fernandes also has represented India 25 times, contributing seven assists.

Fernandes will likely add flair and creativity to Mumbai City FC’s midfield. He can enhance the team’s attacking prowess as they aim for more success in the upcoming season.

Expressing his joy at rejoining the club, Fernandes said, “I am delighted to return to Mumbai City FC. It is one of the top clubs in Indian football, and it represents a new challenge for me.”

He added, “The team has been performing brilliantly over the last few years. I am thrilled to join such a talented squad. I am eager to contribute in the upcoming season as we strive to secure more silverware.”

Head coach Petr Kratky praised Fernandes: “Brandon is a dynamic midfielder whose performances last season stood out. His skills, vision, and relentless dedication on the field will add a new dimension to our squad. As an attacking and creative player, Brandon embodies our football philosophy of dynamic and forward-thinking play.”

Mumbai City FC CEO Kandarp Chandra also expressed enthusiasm: “Brandon Fernandes has been one of the brightest footballers in India over the last few years. I am delighted to welcome him back to Mumbai City FC. His skill on the pitch is exactly what our team needs. We are eager to witness the incredible moments he will create for our club.”

Fernandes’ addition to the team is anticipated to bolster Mumbai City FC’s quest for further ISL glory, as both the club and its supporters look forward to his performances on the pitch.
