After a long, and what seemed an endless, delay, the 2025-2026 edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) is slated to get underway from February 14. This will be a highly curtailed event since it is starting this late, instead of the usual September-October period. The reason for its late start is due to the expiry of the Master Right Agreement (MRA) between Football Sports Development Ltd (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
The former entity was in charge of organising the ISL till its latest edition (2024-25) but the agreement between the parties came to an end in December 2025. A total of 14 teams are expected to take part in this edition of the ISL, which will see its 12th season after having started in 2014.
The first day of the new tournament will see defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant take on southern powerhouses Kerala Blasters before FC Goa host the newly-promoted Inter Kashi. The schedule released is only tentative, and the final fixtures – including those of the playoffs – are still awaited. Most matchdays will see double-headers to make up for lost time. The much-awaited Kolkata (or Calcutta) derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal is scheduled for May 3. The playoffs are expected to start after Chennaiyin FC host Bengaluru FC on May 17 in the final league game.
Although the ISL was left out of the AIFF calendar due to its uncertainty, it has now been reinstated, given its status as the premier football tournament in the country. This has relegated the I-League to second-tier status. The winners of the ISL, as usual, will be handed two qualification spots in the Asian Football Confederation’s continental competitions – one for the league winner and one for the Cup winner. Mohun Bagan are currently the defending champions in both formats.
